Santa Barbara Nonprofits & Charities: Unity Shoppe
Welcome to our latest blog series! Over the next four weeks, we will highlight Santa Barbara nonprofits and charities that are close to our hearts. At the David Kim Group, we are passionate about giving back and aim to bring awareness to the incredible work these local organizations do for our community and environment.
Unity Shoppe: Dignity. Respect. Choice.
This week, we are showcasing Unity Shoppe, a nonprofit dedicated to providing free essential services to residents impacted by temporary conditions of poverty, natural disaster or health crisis. Unity Shoppe provides residents in need with essentials like groceries, clothing, and even job training to foster dignity and independence within themselves. Unity Shoppe is also committed to creating an inclusive community that promotes diversity and equality, where people of all backgrounds can get the proper resources and care they need.

Civic leader and historic preservationist and conservationist, Dr. Peal Chase founded Unity Shoppe’s predecessor “Council of Christmas Cheer” in 1917. This charity collected goods, clothing, and used toys for mothers who were heading their households while their husbands were fighting in World War II. In 1972, Barbara Tellefson began volunteering at the Council and eventually took over the charity once Dr. Pearl Chase retired, renaming the Council “Unity Shoppe” and establishing the organization we know today. Later, with support from entertainer Kenny Loggins and local TV news station KEYT, Unity Shoppe began a fundraising telethon in support of Santa Barbara’s low income residents, which is now held every holiday season.
Today, Unity Shoppe continues to run strong in Santa Barbara, with a general and grocery store and thrift shop offering goods to our neighbors in need. Over 90% of their donations go directly towards services and programs, with over 15,000 people assisted annually. Unity Shoppe’s impact has even influenced charities in other parts of the country, with its model being replicated in cities like Nashville, Tennessee and Blacksburg, Virginia.
